LAFAYETTE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Indiana State Police are investigating the death of an inmate in the Tippecanoe County Jail.
The inmate was found unresponsive in the shower Sunday from what is believed to be a self-inflicted injury.
Officials have not released the person’s name or what they were jailed for. An autopsy will be conducted.

At the request of the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office, the Indiana State Police are investigating the death of an inmate at the Tippecanoe County Jail.
A preliminary investigation by detectives from the Lafayette Post revealed that on August 20, 2023, just after 4:00 p.m., Tippecanoe County jail staff was alerted by an inmate of a possible medical emergency in a shower at the jail. Jail staff then located an inmate in the shower unresponsive due to an apparent self-inflicted injury and requested EMS. Despite life-saving efforts, the inmate was pronounced deceased at the jail by the Tippecanoe County Coroner.
The preliminary investigation does not indicate any signs of foul play. An autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death. The name of the inmate will be released by the Tippecanoe County Coroner at a later date.
This is an active and ongoing investigation. There is no further information to release at this time.
