FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Indiana Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (INASLA) has awarded MKSK Studios and the City of Fort Wayne the Merit Award for exceptional work on the restoration of the Columbia Street Streetscape also known as The Landing.
The project was selected in the category of Design – Constructed Works on a project with a construction budget of less than $2 million.
The historic Columbia Street in downtown Fort Wayne has been revitalized through a collaborative effort between MKSK and the City’s Community Development Division.

As part of the City’s broader strategy of downtown revitalization and growth, attention to Columbia Street became a priority. The project aimed to restore vibrancy and identity to this corridor, lined with charming historic buildings.
The project eliminated vertical curbing, seamlessly integrating the street and sidewalk to allow easy event setup and smooth pedestrian flow. Wider sidewalks were added for outdoor dining, and vertical columns with operable gate arms designated the street as pedestrian-only during events. Safety for all was a priority, with distinct pavement patterns, planters, benches, trees, and furnishings enhancing the space.

The revitalization of Columbia Street honors the city’s history while envisioning a vibrant future for public spaces. It now serves as a thriving civic space supporting local businesses and is a point of destination.
The award ceremony was held last month. The Indiana Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (INASLA) annually recognizes outstanding landscape architecture projects within the state. These awards aim to promote excellence, enhance public appreciation of quality landscape architecture, and raise awareness of the profession and the American Society of Landscape Architects.
