Last week was National Farm Safety and Health Week and annually it’s a week dedicated to the awareness of safety surrounding our farmers during this busy season. In doing our part to raise awareness, Hoosier Ag Today produced a cute Farm Safety video starring two adorable little girls, Nora and Henley.
“Sometimes farm equipment can take up most of the road. It’s not because they want to block traffic, it’s because they’re really wide and heavy. They can’t just pull over anywhere, but they will pull over when it’s safe. Just be patient….it might take a minute,” says Henley Hoffman.
Harvest season is a time of long hours, heavy machinery, and high pressure to get the job done. But no job is worth risking a life. That’s why National Farm Safety and Health Week is always more than just a reminder one week out of the year — it’s a commitment to safety all harvest long.
That’s why Nora Kinsler says, “My Dad drives a big grain truck during harvest. It’s important to me and everyone in our family that he comes home safely every night. Please don’t pass in a no-passing zone or near a bridge, railroad, or intersection. And never pass on the left. If the farmer might be turning left, you could drive right into them.”
Every year, too many farmers, workers, and family members are injured or killed in preventable accidents. So, whether it’s taking five minutes for a safety check, staying alert behind the wheel, or just being very aware of your surroundings, especially in rural areas, every action counts.
National Farm Safety and Health Week might be over but there is plenty of harvesting left to do. So, join us in harvest safety every day.
