Indiana families planning a Fourth of July barbecue are getting some welcome news at the grocery store.
According to the Indiana Farm Bureau’s annual Summer Cookout Market Basket Survey, the average cost to feed 10 people this year is $66.73, or about $6.67 per person. That’s a 7 percent decrease compared to last summer.

Chief Economist with Indiana Farm Bureau, Todd Davis says, “Our shoppers actually found both the beef and pork to be lower than last summer’s survey. They found the ground beef prices to be 6% lower and pork chops to be 2% lower. And those two items are about 40% of the total cost of the market basket. So what happens with pork and beef will really drive the changes in the market basket?”
The survey tracks the cost of popular cookout favorites, giving shoppers a snapshot of what they’ll likely spend for a holiday meal. And not only are Hoosiers paying less than they did last year, they’re also spending about 10 percent less than the national average to host a Fourth of July cookout.
Davis adds, “As the one of the top five AG states in the country we’re crucial to feeding not only the United States, but the world. And that’s the role Indiana farmers play.”
With Independence Day just around the corner, Hoosiers can celebrate with family and friends while spending a little less at the checkout line.
