FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Alive Community Outreach received a $5,000 one-year grant from the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation during the Foundation’s spring grant cycle.
The grant will be used for operational support enabling Alive to build capacity as a young, growing organization focused on cultivating a community of nonviolence.
The group released the following:
Rev. Angelo Mante, Alive’s Founder and Executive Director, says that the organization’s primary programs – Co-Victim Care and Nonviolence/Peacemaking Education – are quickly growing. “This grant will help us move forward to hire additional staff in both program areas. We are supporting more families affected by homicide as they work through that experience to rebuild their lives. Additionally, Peacemaker Academy just launched its second student cohort at South Side High School with plans to implement monthly peace-oriented events,” said Mante.
Violent acts create trauma, and if not resolved, escalate the cycle of and potential for more violence. Cynthia Gardner, Family Support Coordinator, knows firsthand the impact of violence of losing a loved one to gun violence. “There are way too many young people in our community losing their lives to senseless violence,” she said. “I know what it’s like to lose a loved one and I’m blessed to be in a role where I can offer my love and support to other families going through it. I’m also proud to work with an organization that is dedicated to educating young leaders who want to break the cycle of violence in our community.”
