COLUMBUS, Ohio (ADAMS) – State lawmakers are discussing legislation that would lower the minimum age for hiring police officers in Ohio.
House members are considering a bill that passed through the Senate last month, reducing the hiring age for law enforcement from 21 years old to 18. Co-sponsor Senator Kristina Roegner says the measure would help communities across the state battle an ongoing shortage of officers.
The Ohio FOP is opposed to lowering the age, saying 18-year-olds do not have the life experience needed to make difficult choices while working in law enforcement.
