FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Southwest Allen County Schools is celebrating one of their own after Homestead High School’s band leader was named the 2027 Indiana Teacher of the Year.
Indiana Governor Mike Braun was on hand to honor Jason Witzigreuter, Associate Director of Bands at Homestead.
Witzigreuter was also named the 2026 Homestead High School Teacher of the Year and the 2026 Southwest Allen County Schools Teacher of the Year.

Today is an incredibly proud day for Southwest Allen County Schools.
I am thrilled to share that Homestead High School Band Director Jason Witzigreuter has been named Indiana’s 2027 Teacher of the Year!
The announcement came this morning in a way Jason will certainly never forget. Indiana Governor Mike Braun and Indiana Secretary of Education Dr. Katie Jenner joined us at Homestead High School for a special pep session, surprising Jason in front of an arena filled with students, staff, colleagues, family and special guests.
The reaction said it all. The cheers, excitement and genuine emotion throughout the arena reflected just how much Jason means to his students, his colleagues and the entire SACS community.
Being selected as Indiana Teacher of the Year is an extraordinary honor. Jason was chosen from among exceptional educators across our state, and he will now have the opportunity to represent Indiana’s teachers and share his passion for education on an even larger stage.
While today’s recognition belongs to Jason, it also shines a light on something we see every day throughout SACS: the tremendous and lasting impact great educators have on the lives of students.
Jason’s impact extends far beyond teaching music. He challenges students to pursue excellence, encourages them to believe in themselves and creates an environment where they learn the value of hard work, perseverance, teamwork and belonging. Those are lessons that stay with students long after they leave his classroom and graduate from Homestead.
I could not be prouder of Jason, and I am incredibly grateful that Governor Braun and Dr. Jenner joined our students and staff to make today’s announcement so memorable.
This is a tremendous honor for Jason, Homestead High School and our entire district. Most importantly, it is a well-deserved recognition of an educator who represents so much of what we strive for at Southwest Allen County Schools.
