Meet Purdue’s 9 Distinguished Agriculture Alumni Award Honorees for 2026

Nine Purdue Agriculture alumni whose careers have spanned fields ranging from animal health and agronomy to food science, forestry, landscape architecture and agricultural economics were recognized Friday as Purdue University’s 2026 Distinguished Agriculture Alumni.

The honorees were recognized during a ceremony Oct. 2 in Deans Auditorium at Pfendler Hall on the Purdue University campus.

The annual award recognizes mid-career Purdue College of Agriculture alumni who have established records of outstanding accomplishment, made significant contributions to their professions or society and demonstrated strong potential for continued professional growth.

This year’s class represented the breadth of Purdue Agriculture’s influence across the agricultural and natural-resource industries, academia, government and corporate America.

Among the nine honorees was Kyle Shipman, Indiana’s state veterinarian with the Indiana State Board of Animal Health. Shipman earned his bachelor’s degree in animal sciences from Purdue in 2011 and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2015.

Shipman’s recognition came as Indiana’s livestock industry continued to face increasingly complex challenges involving animal health, biosecurity and disease preparedness.

The 2026 class also included Kristin Floress, a research social scientist with the U.S. Forest Service in Island Lake, Illinois. Floress earned her Ph.D. in forestry and natural resources from Purdue in 2008 and had previously been recognized with a Purdue alumni award in 2025.

Jacob Goheen, an assistant professor at Iowa State University, was recognized after earning his master’s degree in forestry and natural resources from Purdue in 2002.

John P. Haven, principal at LaBlanc Jones Landscape Architects in Boston, Massachusetts, was honored after earning his bachelor’s degree in horticulture and landscape architecture in 2001.

Jason Henderson, vice president for Extension and Outreach at Iowa State University, was recognized for a career that followed Purdue degrees in agricultural economics, including a master’s degree in 1996 and a doctorate in 2001.

The class also included Andrew P. Michel, associate dean at Ohio State University’s Wooster campus. Michel earned his Purdue bachelor’s degree in entomology in 2001.

Dianne Ripberger, senior director at PepsiCo in Plano, Texas, was recognized after earning her master’s degree in food science from Purdue in 2001.

Matthew D. Ruark, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was honored after earning his Ph.D. in agronomy from Purdue in 2006.

Rounding out the class was Lisa Vaillancourt, a professor at the University of Kentucky who earned her Ph.D. in botany and plant pathology from Purdue in 1991.

Together, the nine honorees represented careers that extended well beyond traditional production agriculture, demonstrating the wide-ranging impact of Purdue-trained agricultural professionals.

The Distinguished Agriculture Alumni Award was established in 1992. Purdue typically selects 10 or fewer alumni each year, with recipients recognized during a fall convocation on the West Lafayette campus.

Selection was made by a committee consisting of the dean of agriculture, associate deans, assistant dean, department heads and unit directors.

The award was designed to recognize alumni generally 10 to 25 years removed from their most recent Purdue agriculture degree, placing an emphasis on professionals who had established significant career accomplishments while still demonstrating potential for continued growth.

Over more than three decades, the program had recognized hundreds of Purdue Agriculture alumni whose work has reached farms, laboratories, universities, government agencies, corporations, natural-resource organizations and communities around the world.

For Purdue Agriculture, the annual recognition provided a snapshot of the lasting reach of its graduates — and the diverse ways those graduates had applied their Purdue education to agriculture and society.
