FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – A home on the southeast side of Fort Wayne was badly damaged in a fire Saturday evening. The Fort Wayne Fire Department says that flames were reported around 6:30 p.m. in the 5200 block of Gaywood Drive.
One resident was saved by neighbors who broke through a front window and carried them out uninjured when firefighters were on the way. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The FWFD released the following:
FWFD crews responded to a reported house on fire. While in route 911 received multiple calls stating a house was on fire with heavy fire and smoke showing from the house. An elderly resident was also reported to be inside the home. Crews arrived on scene and found a one-story house with heavy fire from the rear of the home and the attic and roof spaces.
Neighbors had broken a front window to make entry and carried the elderly occupant out of the house to safety, prior to the FWFD arriving. Crews utilized multiple hose lines and cut multiple holes in the roof to access and extinguish the heavy fire in the attic area and rear of the home. Fire was brought under control in just over thirty minutes. Crews were going to remain on scene for extensive overhaul of the structure making sure all the fire was extinguished. Fire investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire. Occupant was transported to a local hospital for evaluation by TRAA. FWPD, NIPSCO, AEP, and Neighborhood Code Enforcement all responded and assisted on scene.
